When to Add Key Figures to Your Nativity Scene
As traditions have grown up around displaying nativity sets, so too have customs about when to introduce the starring figures. Many families follow a timeline that echoes the unfolding story of Christmas itself:
- December 24th: The Baby Jesus, as the centerpiece of the nativity, is placed in the manger on Christmas Eve to commemorate his birth.
- Following days: Shepherds join the scene soon after, arriving to gaze in wonder at the newborn child.
- January 6th (Epiphany): On the twelfth day of Christmas, the Wise Men—also called the Magi—are added to complete the tableau, marking their celebrated visit.
These small rituals help retell a treasured story, building anticipation and meaning throughout the Christmas season.
In the early twelfth century, crèche was used to describe the birthplace of Christ. The term was coined after Saint Francis of Assisi celebrated Midnight Mass in a stable where men and animals reenacted the Christmas story. The crèche, derived from the German word krippe or crib, refers to the animals' manger in which Christ was born. It later became known as the Nativity. The Nativity scene joins together Mary, Joseph, the baby Jesus, shepherds, angels, and on Epiphany, the Wise Men.
