This 3" tall two-tone satin ornament tells the story of the Christmas customs of Portugal. Crafted of glass exclusively for Bronner's from Hungary, our Portuguese Christmas custom ornament is sure to be a fun and enlightening conversation piece for years to come! Custom on the back of the ornament reads:
Both the nativity and the Christmas tree play important roles in the Christmas celebration in Portugal. In preparation for the coming of the Christ Child, many rural Portuguese carol from house to house asking, "Is there room?" Christmas Eve is a time of heightened celebration as children place their shoes by the fireplace in anticipation of gifts from the Infant Jesus or Santa Claus. Consoada, a special holiday meal, is eaten on Christmas Eve and at midnight many people attend midnight mass. A traditional sweet is the kingcake, baked with a dry bean inside of it. Whoever finds the dry bean has to pay the kingcake or buy another one to eat at the midnight supper on December 31.
