| According to legend, St. Valentine was a priest during the third century in Rome. Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men, believing that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families. Valentine, knowing that marriage is one of God's most precious sacraments, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages in secret. Valentine was imprisoned after his actions were uncovered. While in jail, he fell in love and supposedly sent the first valentine to the daughter of the jailor who visited him during his confinement. Before Claudius had him executed, Valentine wrote her a letter and signed it From Your Valentine, an expression we use today. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine's Day around 498 A.D. Although the truth behind stories of St. Valentine is hard to prove, his appeal as a brave, compassionate, and romantic figure grew in popularity during the Renaissance and continues in modern times.
