M.I. Hummel Figurines
Tell a Friend
100TH ANNIVERSARY 2009
Noted for her heartwarming renderings of Bavarian children, Berta Hummel, born May 21, 1909, was a brilliant artist who used the sights and sounds of her rural village of Massing, Germany, as inspiration for her art. Finely crafted in Roedental Germany by Goebel artisans through 2008, each Hummel figurine is a charming reminder of childhood's simple joys.

Don't miss your opportunity to "adopt" one of these beloved Bavarian children from remaining Goebel production, ended in 2008. Manufaktur Rodental GmbH announced in Feb. 2009 it has purchased all rights to M.I. Hummel to resume production in Germany. (Goebel will now exclusively focus on glass and porcelain accessories).

Since the mid 1900’s, Hummel figurines have been a popular collectible for many people all over the world. 2009 is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Hummel's artwork creator Berta Hummel. The innocent, childlike aura of each piece gives a feeling of sentiment and warmth for all who own them. Because each Hummel figure piece is highly valued and extremely collectible, a watchful eye should be kept in order to determine if a piece is legitimate. A real Hummel figurine will always have its creator, Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel’s signature embossed on the bottom (M.I. Hummel). This is a very distinguishing mark that lets the buyer know they are getting the real thing. Additionally, each of the MI Hummel figurines has a mold number embossed on the bottom to signify what piece it is. The Goebel mark will also be embossed on each piece of the Goebel figurines.

Since Hummel figurines are highly valued by countless collectors, every piece has a value to it. Sometimes pieces can be worth as much as a few thousand dollars, depending on how rare it is. There are countless Hummel collector’s clubs where members discuss the latest pieces, hard to find figurines, and where to buy new ones. If you personally own Hummel figurines and would like to know the value, there are many companies and individuals who offer fair and honest appraisals. There are also several different price guides available that can be purchased through most bookstores.

Hummel figurines are not the only items available with the adorable children. Collectible plates, ornaments, music boxes, and candleholders are also available, although they may not be as high in value as the original figurines. For a true fan of Hummel, these are just as special because they bear the artwork of Berta Hummel (her name prior to ordination in the Convent of Siessen). Whether you are a Hummel collector looking to add a new piece to an existing collection, want to start a new one, or you’re looking for the perfect Christmas gift, Hummel figurines are a wonderful choice that will stand the test of time.
