The tradition of Advent wreaths...

Advent Wreaths
Bookmark and Share
... began in the pre-Christian Germanic culture. In the cold, dark winters of Eastern Europe, the people gathered evergreen wreaths and lighted fires as signs of hope for the light and warmth of spring. Christians kept this ritual alive, and in the 16th century the tradition of using evergreen wreaths to celebrate the light of Christ was practiced by Catholics and Protestants throughout Germany. From Germany, the tradition of Advent wreaths spread to other sections of the Christian world.
Traditionally, the Advent wreath is made of four candles in a circle of evergreens with an optional fifth candle in the middle. Three candles are one color, typically violet, and a fourth is rose, but these colors vary. Each day the candles are lighted, one candle the first week and then another each succeeding week until Christmas Day. The last candle is lighted December 25th to represent the birth of Christ.
Bronner's is pleased to present this selection of Advent wreaths with hopes that this beautiful tradition will continue.

Advent is a term for the period that begins with the Sunday closest to the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, which begins on November 30th. It continues for four Sundays thereafter, and can last anywhere from 21 to 28 days, depending on which date the Sunday falls. This tradition has long been practiced by several religions, and Advent wreaths are a symbol used to celebrate the occasion. Most typical Advent wreaths are made of natural evergreen branches. Four Advent candles are inserted into the wreath, symbolizing the four weeks of Advent. Typically, three of the four candles are purple in color, while the fourth candle is usually a rose or pink color. Purple symbolizes humility, while the lighter rose color represents hope and encouragement.

Only one of the candles is lit the first week, with the next candle lit the following week, and so on, until all four candles are lit at the same time on the final and fourth week. Some styles of Advent Wreaths incorporate a fifth candle. This candle is white and is lit on Christmas Day. Usually an Advent wreath is placed on the dinner table and left there for the duration of the four weeks. Many people choose to eat their meals by the light of the Advent wreath's candles alone. Advent wreaths can be purchased, or you can make your own using a few easy to find materials. Most people choose to use natural greenery, but artificial branches work just as well and can be used over and over again. If you choose to use natural greenery, you will need florist's foam to secure the branches. Soak the foam in water before inserting the branches in it to provide water for them during the Advent season.

In order to keep the candles in place, carve four holes to fit the size of the candles in the florist’s foam . Always remember to keep a close eye on the burning candles in order to avoid a fire. Do not let the candles burn too low. If you find that your candles are burning too fast, simply replace the openings with new ones. Advent wreaths are a beautiful Christmas decoration and a wonderful tradition that can be passed down over the generations.
